東日本大震災の発生から今日で10年となりました。
この震災により犠牲になられた方々に改めて心からの哀悼の意を表します。
私には、岩手、宮城、福島を中心とした被災地に、
柔道やスポーツを通じた仲間や知り合いが大勢います。
この10年、それぞれに事情は違えども、
日々の生活を整えながら、少しでも前進しようとする姿にたびたび接してきました。
そうした皆さんの姿を見るにつけ、
人間のたくましさと尊さを感じ、私自身、非常に励まされてきました。
震災直後の2011年11月には、山下泰裕先生とともに石巻市を訪れ、
NPO法人柔道教育ソリダリティー主催による柔道教室を行い、
翌年には大船渡市にもうかがいました。
そのとき出会った皆さんとの触れ合いも忘れられません。
柔道をしている間はせめて日常を離れ、
楽しい一時を過ごして欲しいと思っていましたが、
元気いっぱいの子供たちとの時間は私にとっても非常に楽しいものとなり、
感謝の気持ちを抱きながら帰路につきました。
いずれについても鮮明に思い出すことができます。
震災発生から10年が経ち、復興・復旧が進んだ面もあれば、
そうでない面もあるかと思います。
しかしながらこの10年の経験は
必ずや未来に生きるはずであり、そう願ってやみません。
この10年という歳月を思うとともに、
私自身、これからも柔道を通じた心の復興に
少しでもお役に立てるよう微力ながらこれからも尽力してまいりたいと思っています。

Today marks ten years since the Great East Japan Earthquake.
I would again like to express my deepest sympathies for the victims of the disaster.
I have a great number of friends and acquaintances, through sport and judo who live in the disaster-stricken area, mainly in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima.
Though their situations have differed over the past ten years I have been very aware that they all work hard to keep moving forward while rebuilding their everyday lives.
In them I have observed the strength and nobleness of the human spirit which in turn has been a great source of inspiration for me.
After the disaster, In November of 2011, YAMASHITA Yasuhiro sensei and I visited Ishinomaki City to give a judo lesson on behalf of the Solidarity of Judo Education NPO . The following year I visited Ofunato City to give another judo lesson.
I will never forget the people I met during that visit.
My hope was for them to forget about their lives for a while and enjoy doing judo, but after working with the children there I left feeling very grateful for the extremely fun time I had with them. I still have vivid memories now.
Ten years have passed since the disaster and some areas have been revived and restored where others have not. I sincerely hope, however, that the experiences of the past ten years will lead to a better future.
Reflecting on the past ten years and looking to the future, I hope to do everything within my power through judo to help rebuild people’s faith.
